Reboot

I was talking to my sister the other day and she was telling me about a documentary she'd recently watched called Sick, Fat, and Nearly Dead. Inspired, I decided to try the juice reboot that the two men used to lose weight. I still have a little weight to lose (not nearly as much as the guys in the documentary, of course), but I thought an all fruit/veggie diet would give my energy level a boost. So I thought I would use my blog to document my journey.
I'm currently on Day 2 and, let me tell you, it's a miracle that I have come this far after Day 1. I began Day 1 drinking the Purple Power juice, which consisted of grapes, blackberries, a pear (I think), and some ginger. Well, I put too much ginger in it, but it was drinkable. That drink did leave me full though. At lunch, I drank something called the Gazpacho. Let me stop here and say that you can find the actual recipes and program at www.jointhereboot.com. It's free. Anyway, that drink consisted of tomato, celery, red bell pepper, red onion, cucumber, parsley...and I think that's it. It was nasty. I should have realized that because I don't like celery and it had a very strong celery flavor. I don't think the red onion juice helped either. However, I made myself drink it and had the most awful taste in my mouth the rest of the afternoon. I also had a salad and, yes, I'm going to admit my cheats...it had some cheddar cheese, ranch dressing, and croutons.
The third drink was another mainly fruit drink, although it did have some spinach. It was the best of the day. I also had another salad with the same cheat ingredients. I also drank a lot of water throughout the day, but I always drink water. I had a headache from afternoon on and at the end of the day I told Benjamin that I just wasn't sure if I could stick to it for 5 days (which is my goal).
So I woke up this morning and stepped on the scale. I'd lost a pound (which put me at the lowest I've been since before I got pregnant with Pressley). This renewed my determination to continue. So I made another juice this morning, again this one was primarily fruit. It had blackberries, strawberries, kiwi fruit, and coconut water and was yummy. Even Pressley liked it.
My grandfather brought over some fresh garden tomatoes so I decided to use the ripe ones for my lunch time juice. I concocted my own recipe for this one using tomatoes, carrots, spinach, and an apple. It was much better that the veggie juice I'd had the previous day. One thing I noticed is that this morning's juice didn't hold me over nearly as long as breakfast drink from Day 1.
I did snack on some almonds, but they were all natural and no salt or anything. My third drink was another fruit mixture: pineapple, blackberries, kiwi fruit, apple, and coconut water. I'm planning on having okra and a squash/zucchini/onions tonight. They'll be cooked in EVOO with a little salt and pepper.
So the problems I've encountered so far: 1. It's expensive to buy copious amounts of fresh produce. Like for 3 days of juices it has cost me around $120. And that's just for me. Benjamin is planning on doing it next week and I don't think the cost will quite double, but considering how we normally spend $150-200 in groceries, I'm sure we will exceed our usual budget. 2.I have to go to the grocery store every day or every other day. That's probably not a big deal for some people, and it isn't a huge one for me, but I have two little kids that I have to drag out with me (they are normally very good) but I have to plan around Jackson's naps and eating schedule. And honestly, this stay at home mom doesn't really fix her hair and make-up every day...unless I'm going out. I guess Benjamin does get to see me fixed up more so that's a plus for him. 3. Some of the ingredients are hard to find in po-dunk Honea Path. This isn't as much of a problem now. I've realized that not all the juices on that website are tasty so if it's something I haven't heard of then I probably wouldn't want to drink the juice of it anyway. However, I can not find coconut water at Bi-lo (my closest grocery store), but they do have it at the Ingles in Belton. Of course, it's $2.38 for a small container and I had to buy three of them. 4. I can't find the right blend for a good veggie juice, which means I lean towards the fruit juice. Fruit has more calories and sugar so I need to be drinking more of the veggies. I wish I could find the right amounts of the veggies they put in V8 juice because I love it.
So my goal is to go at least until Monday, which would be Day 5. My ultimate goal is to do this until next Thursday. I plan on updating each night, but don't be surprised if I don't make it because this is definitely hard to do. Not at all as easy as I thought it would be.
